Big Pine Creek Highlights

In October of 2022, a group of Benton County SWCD employees, volunteers, landowners, and partners traveled to the Indiana State House to meet with Governor Holcomb and accept the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.

From October 28, 2022, to December 11, 2022, the Benton County SWCD partnered with Indiana Humanities, The Smithsonian Institution, and the Otterbein Library to host the Smithsonian Water/Ways Exhibit. The exhibit highlighted the importance of water and how we are all connected in some way to the water. Throughout the time that the exhibit was displayed, 2 schools and over 300 people visited the library to see the exhibit.

On April 19, 2022, the premier of the film “Land-Values” was held at the Fowler Theater. The film explained the importance of the Big Pine Creek Watershed, told the story of its history, and showed the impact of the conservation efforts implemented by the farmers and landowners that live within the watershed. The film has been released to the public and is now available on YouTube.

On April 5, 2023, Senator Braun met with staff from the Benton County SWCD, local farmers, and local landowners to discuss the importance of the Big Pine Watershed and how the conservation practices implemented within the watershed are improving the water quality, not just in the county, but also far downstream.
